Women’s Outdoor Research Ferossi Shorts Review
Bottom Line
The Outdoor Research Ferrosi Shorts stand out for their breathability, durability, and versatility. We tested them on steep uphill hikes and rocky scrambles, where the stretchy and sturdy fabric felt good on the skin, even in hot weather. The waistband doesn’t budge during hikes. While we’re not big on belted shorts, some folks might consider this a bonus feature. They dry quickly, making them great for sweaty days or water crossings, and the deep pockets are super functional, though a bit snug for larger phones. These are a great option for those seeking high-performing hiking shorts that balance comfort and durability. They have inclusive sizing and are flattering for all body types. While they may be a bit spendy, their long-lasting design justifies the investment for frequent hikers.

Comfort
The Ferrosi shorts are extremely comfortable and easy to wear, even when they are wet or sweaty. The waistband has some elastic flex but is secure and holds up well – a great feature – as many waistbands on hiking shorts are prone to bagging out or fitting poorly. The belt, however, is our biggest gripe. We can tell it won’t be ideal for every hip and waist size, so the belt clasp can get lost in the built-in belt sleeve, or you might have a hard time clasping the belt closed if you need to cinch in. Once you dial in the belt fit, they are comfortable for all-day wear. Plus, they look stylish for around-town use, so these versatile shorts are handy if you want to throw a sweatshirt over and pass for outdoor chic. We did not find that they chafed after getting wet and sweaty, which is a huge plus. The legs of the shorts are designed to be wide around your body, so there is barely any rubbing, and the fabric is soft against the skin.
Durability
These shorts can take on any rough-and-tumble trail! We tested the Ferrosi’s fabric by rubbing it against rocks, trees, and thick brush during multiple hikes each week. Despite the rough treatment, they didn’t tear, pill, or show any signs of wear. After sitting and scooting on rough terrain, the fabric still looked nearly new, which makes them ideal for more rugged adventures. We also ran them through the wash several times, and the fit and material held up perfectly, so they’re definitely built to last. If you need shorts that can handle a lot of trail time, the Ferrosi is a solid option.
Features
The Ferrosi Shorts shine when it comes to features. They offer deep mesh-lined pockets and one back pocket with a zipper for extra security. We tested these on a steep hike with a phone, snacks, and a small multitool in our pockets. While the front pockets are deep enough to hold a phone, the zippered back pocket felt more secure for keeping valuables in place, especially when scrambling up rocks.
One downside is the built-in belt, which can feel unnecessary since the waistband is already elastic enough to stay in place without it. It sometimes got in the way when wearing a heavy backpack, making it a bit uncomfortable. However, the shorts’ breathability and practical storage still make them top performers.
Dry Time
One of the most impressive aspects of the Ferrosi Shorts is how fast they dry. During one of our tests, we soaked the shorts completely, and they dried out in no time while still staying comfortable. The water-resistant fabric causes moisture to bead off initially, but the shorts retain their quick-drying properties even when they get fully wet. This was a huge plus on hot days when we were sweating or crossed streams. Even after a heavy downpour, the shorts dried fast enough that we didn’t feel soggy or weighed down for long. If you’re hiking in unpredictable weather, Ferrosi’s quick-drying fabric is a major bonus.
Weight & Packed Size
The Ferrosi Shorts are impressively lightweight, which makes them a go-to option for packing light. Whether you’re stuffing them into an over-packed backpack or just trying to keep things minimal, they don’t take up much room at all. We noticed the shorts packed down fairly well for a multi-day trip, but they could have been even more compact without the belt. Still, they weigh next to nothing, and when you’re on a long hike, you’ll appreciate how little they add to your overall pack weight. The fabric also has a nice balance between being thin but not flimsy, which helps them feel light but still durable.
Should You Buy the Outdoor Research Ferrosi?
If you’re looking for lightweight, flattering, durable hiking shorts that can handle a range of outdoor activities, the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Shorts are a great option. They’re long-lasting and ideal for hikers and backpackers who want a sturdy waistband, good pockets, plus comfort, breathability, and quick-dry fabric. If you love a built-in belt and a solid elastic waistband that keeps the shorts in place, you’ll love these.
If you want shorts that don’t cling to your legs and feel good no matter the activity, these are for you. Though there are better options if you want a simpler, minimalist design, the Ferrosi Shorts provide excellent value for those who want a versatile, rugged, and comfortable pair for multi-sports and short or long hikes.
What Other Hiking Shorts Should You Consider?
Patagonia Quandary Review: If you’re considering alternatives to the Ferrosi Shorts, we recommend the Patagonia Quandary. They’re a great pick for those who want a different style but a lightweight fabric. With stretchy fabric and a water-repellent finish, they’re more versatile and work for tough hikes or casual days in town.
Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Bermuda: The Mountain Hardwear Dynama/2 Bermuda shorts are perfect if you prefer a flat, super-comfy waistband that won’t dig in during long treks. Their slightly longer length adds extra coverage.
Houdini Wadi Shorts Review: If you want something a little lighter but still has a belt, the Houdini Wadi Shorts are a fantastic option. They’re extremely light and comfortable, dry super fast, and have deep pockets for stashing essentials—ideal for hot weather hikes.
