OFFGRID Holiday Outdoor Backcountry Camping and Fishing Guide
We’ve done a lot of gear guides over the years, and they are always some of our favorites because we get to feature new gear and gear that we actually use out on our backcountry adventures. With Christmas just around the corner, we rounded up some of our top outdoor adventure and fishing gear to make your holiday gift hunting a bit easier.
For those of you who follow my other site, CountryHookers.com, you know I’m an avid angler who spends lots of time fishing deep in the mountains.
When it comes to staying light and quick in the backcountry and hitting those hard-to-find spots and small creeks without a lot of casting room, the Tenkara Beartooth from Tenkara Rod Co is the way to go. The rod is so tiny it can literally be slipped into a pocket or ultra-light hiking pack and is probably one of the coolest and most fun little rods you can carry. Check out our full review at Country Hookers.
Hardy Aydon Travel Fly Rod
The Aydon fly rod, recently released by Hardy, is an elegant-looking, higher-end fly rod that is meant for everything from small stream trout fishing to stillwater fishing large bodies of open water. The Aydon is lightweight, easy to pack, and made by a company that makes some of the finest fly rods in the world. It’s extremely enjoyable to fish, casts smoother than anything I’ve used in quite some time, and handles pretty much any fly we use on it.
Hardy, based in Alnwick, England, has been handcrafting high-end fly gear since 1872.

Whenever we hit the road for an extended camping or backcountry fishing trip, you can be sure that we have one of our Goal Zero Yetis in the back of the truck. From keeping our cameras, GPS and electronics charged to saving our ass out on the lake when our trolling motor battery died – yep, we used the Yeti 1000 to power our trolling motor- these things are a must-have for off the grid power!
Throw in a couple of their portable solar panels and you are good to go~
This is, after all, a survival and preparedness site, so we wanted to throw in a bugout/travel rod that can be easily carried in any vehicle. The PENN Battle III travel combo is strong, smooth, and will stand up to anything you can throw at it.

Fieldsheer Mobile Warming collection
It’s that time of year when I want to get out there and do some fishing, but damn, it’s cold! I guess it’s living in the desert for the last 20 years, but gearing up and heading up into the mountains this time of year is like heading into the damn arctic circle.
So when we found a new line of heated lifestyle apparel from Fieldsheer, we were hooked! The collection consists of jackets, gloves, shirts, base layers, gloves, and socks – all of them great for keeping warm on those cold mornings when you barely want to touch the reel. All the clothing is Bluetooth-based and uses a very thin, 7.4-volt battery that provides four different heating levels.
Greys Wing Streamflex Fly Rod
The Streamflex series is reshaping the Greys brand. This fly rod pulls double duty, switching between dry fly fishing and European nymphing techniques by inserting an an additional blank stored in the butt section of the rod. Simply unscrew the bottom of the rod, insert the portion between the butt and the lower midsection and transition your rod to support your technique and help with line control when nymphing.
The Streamflex is perfect for Nymphs, Dry Flies, and Streamers.
