Bottom Line

We tested the Black Diamond Distance Spikes all over the widely varying terrain of the Colorado Front Range. They impressed us on trail runs from snowy and icy alpine trails to low-elevation trails with clay, mud, and intermittent patches of ice. The low-profile 8mm spikes offer a ton of versatility.

Black Diamond has done an exceptional job at balancing traction, weight, and fit with these traction devices. The Distance Spikes are notably more aggressive than most running spikes while still maintaining a comfortable and secure fit via their innovative design. These spikes remain snug against the feet, even after miles of running. Their soft shell toe cap reduces weight and foot fatigue. The downside of the Distance Spikes is their limited durability. The mesh upper is inevitably prone to rips and tears, so the spikes are best suited for well-trodden trails.

The impressive performance of these cleats comes at a premium price point. Folks shopping on a budget or looking for more hiking-specific traction should check out alternatives on our full guide to winter traction devices.

How We Tested

Our reviews are derived from close analysis of features and construction as well as real world testing. We determined as much as possible from close examination with the product in-hand and then took it out on the trail. We ran, walked, and skipped down low-elevation trails in the Flatirons with rocks and patches of ice and slush to wintery alpine terrain in the Rockies.

Traction

The Black Diamond Distance spikes are the most aggressive running spikes that we tested. While most running spikes feature a gentler traction like studs or chains, the Distance Spikes are equipped with fourteen aggressive, 8mm spikes. The spikes are spread across two zones on the toe and heel to maximize the traction footprint.

The 8mm spikes, with their equilateral shape, are about as small as spikes get. They are true spikes as opposed to studs or chains. They offer a more close-to-ground feel over most spiked traction devices, plus a low center of gravity for increased balance. The spikes dig in well when striking on the toe or a flat foot, but the smaller number of spikes on the heel can result in decreased traction when running downhill.

Fit

The Distance Spikes provide a comfortable, snug fit that stays securely in place on walks, hikes, and trail runs. The spikes are meant for sneakers and trail runners, but we found them to be compatible with lightweight hiking boots as well. The unique, softshell toe cap hugs the toe without squeezing too tightly or causing an indent in your shoe. The toe cap might be too narrow for some hiking boots, but it works just fine with lower profile boots, especially if your foot size falls at the lower end of the size range.

After running for several miles in the Distance Spikes, we were impressed with how well they stayed securely in place. While some heavier spikes can slip or shift after miles of walking, the lightweight Distance Spikes maintained their position even after many hours of heavy use. The elastic does an excellent job at keeping the heel from sagging and creating a trip hazard. When you’re out on a trail run, you want a set of cleats that you don’t have to constantly reach down and adjust. The low-profile Distance Spikes are perfect for the job.

Ease of Use/Versatility

The Distance Spikes are a versatile set of cleats that work on a variety of surfaces, minimizing the need to take them on and off as the terrain changes. They are most effective on packed down, snowy trails. The spikes dig into ice sufficiently, especially while running, but aren’t quite as effective as larger, pointier spikes. The smaller spike size also makes them less effective on deeper soft snow since they lack the ability to reach down to a firm surface or “paddle” away the fresh snow. The smaller spike size does, however, excel over short sections of dry trail.

Unlike larger spikes that can be clumsy or even sticky over rocks and dirt, the 8mm Distance spikes can handle short sections of dirt, gravel, and rocks without interrupting your stride. The Distance Spikes are best suited for walking or running on gentle to moderate terrain with surfaces ranging from dirt to ice and packed snow.

While other models may be difficult to understand and use, Black Diamond designed the Distance Spikes with user friendliness in mind. The toe is easily recognizable, and the elastic easily stretches over the heel. They even included a useful heel loop for quick adjustments and to avoid getting your fingers trapped in the elastic.

Weight/Packability

When trail-running, you want as little extra weight on your feet as possible to reduce fatigue and ideally run just as you would on a dry summer day. Thanks in part to the softshell toe cap, the Distance Spikes prove superior in both weight and packability.

At just 4.1 ounces for the pair, the Distance Spikes are the lightest of all the ice cleats we tested. They add just 57.5 grams to each foot and naturally glide down the trail with you, having a minimal effect on your running pace. These spikes, although fairly aggressive, are hardly noticeable on the feet.

When not in use, the Distance Spikes add only a few ounces to your pack weight, tucked away neatly into a compact stuff sack.

Should You Buy the Black Diamond Distance Spike?

The Black Diamond Distance Spikes are the ideal trail running tool for dedicated runners tackling the most demanding winter trails. Unlike most running spikes that sacrifice traction for weight savings and versatility on transitional surfaces, the Distance Spikes strike an amazing balance to keep you safe when the trail gets spicy. The fourteen steel spikes maintain a low profile and provide a wide footprint of aggressive traction that efficiently bites into ice and packed snow. Although the Distance Spike is a versatile traction device, it’s specifically designed for trail running, not hiking. It’s overkill for urban environments, and the durability leaves a bit to be desired on rugged, lesser-worn trails. If you’re a winter trail runner, however, it’s our Editor’s Choice winner for Best Runner’s Spikes.

What Other Winter Traction Devices Should You Consider?

Not a trail-runner? Check out our full list of recommended ice cleats for urban use or more technical mountain adventures.

Kahtoola EXOspikes Review: The EXOspikes are stud-style traction devices that are excellent for running, especially if you’re expecting more dry terrain than ice. They lack the aggressiveness of the Distance Spikes but have better durability and are more affordable.

Yaktrax Chains Review: These are a good option for runners shopping on a budget. They don’t provide the same secure fit or aggressive traction as the Distance Spikes, but they’ll suffice for gentle to moderate terrain and are the most affordable on our list.

Kahtoola MICROspikes Review: The MICROspikes are a touch more aggressive than the Distance Spikes but also a little heavier and bulkier. You can run in them, but they are better suited for hiking.
