How We Tested

We tested the Deviation Ankle Boot during a series of hikes through rainy, muddy trails and fall season marina chores in northern Wisconsin. It stood up well to the elements and remained comfortable during multiple hours of use, especially in terms of flexibility and waterproofing.

Weather Resistance

The Deviation Ankle Boot excels in wet conditions, thanks to its fully waterproof rubber construction. It was perfect for tackling rain, light snow, and muddy trails at our tester’s lakeside cabin without worrying about soggy feet. The boot’s seam-sealed design keeps moisture out for comfy feet all day. That said, while it performs well in rain, the ankle-height boot isn’t built for deep snow, standing water, or extreme cold. If you’re braving harsh, sub-zero temperatures, you might need something with more insulation.

Comfort

Comfort is a strong point of the Deviation Ankle Boot. It offers a snug yet flexible fit that allows for easy movement, perfect for active outdoor days. The boot’s lightweight build reduces fatigue, even after hours of wear, and the rubber sole offers enough cushioning and support for both short and long walks. Its interior lining wicks away moisture, keeping feet dry even in humid conditions. Overall, it offers a good balance of comfort and mobility for everyday wear in moderate weather.

Traction

The Deviation is equipped with a slip-resistant outsole that provides excellent traction on wet and slippery surfaces. We navigated muddy trails, slick boat decks, and icy sidewalks, and the tread delivered a secure grip. However, though it excels in conditions like rain and slush, it’s not as aggressive as the tread on more rugged outdoor boots designed for hiking or winter sports. For wet terrain, though, it performs admirably.

Warmth

Although it’s not as insulated as taller winter boots, the Deviation Ankle Boot still provides adequate warmth for most wet-weather activities. Its rubber upper is effective in blocking cold air, but the boot lacks the thick insulation of winter-specific boots. Our tester’s feet struggled a bit when winter temps plunged way below zero. 

If you’re facing extreme cold, you might want something with heavier insulation. The boot is better for moderate weather, including chilly, rainy days.
