My Medic MyFak Mini First Aid Kit Review

Bottom line

The My Medic MyFak Mini is bulkier than its name suggests, yet it is also the most robust and one of the most well-organized first aid kits we tested. It provides ample space for all the supplies you might need for a backpacking trip or Scout campout, and everything is packaged in individual watertight zip-top bags, which My Medic refers to as MODs.

Each MOD contains supplies for specific first aid needs, such as bandages, burn care, wound closure, and more. These individual packages ensured that the supplies remained dry even when the kit got soaked during rainy hikes in Utah.

That protection allowed us to confidently use the MOLLE panels, webbing straps, or stashable hip belt and sling strap to carry the kit outside of our packs when it wouldn’t fit inside. This makes it a suitable option for groups in need of a comprehensive kit that offers plenty of room for customization and various ways to transport it.

How We Tested

We enjoyed taking the MyFak Mini on short day hikes, all-day adventures, and road trips around beautiful Utah during our testing. We encountered snow, rain, and sunshine while spending hours thoughtfully assessing the kit and all its helpful contents, both on the trail and off.

Portability

This kit might be the largest, heaviest, and least flexible we tested, but it still earned a respectable ranking in terms of portability due to the many ways you can carry it.

Of course, you can drop it into a backpack or large daypack, but on trips where our bags were already packed full of other necessities, we appreciated having the option to carry it in various ways. There’s a stashable strap that hides in the back panel and can be deployed so the kit can be carried as a hip pack or cross-body sling. A large MOLLE panel means you can lash it to anything from a canoe to a backpack. A webbing strap that extends around the kit allows you to secure it to other gear.

The variety of carry options alone will be a standout feature for some.

Organization

This was one of the most well-organized first aid kits we tested. Every item is neatly packed into individual zip-top pouches that are clearly color-coded and labeled with the injuries each MOD is meant for. Each pouch also lists its complete contents on the back.

That doesn’t mean everything was quick and easy to locate while we were still familiarizing ourselves with the MODs. We had to find the right MOD in the kit and then open the top seal before we could use the contents inside, which took a few extra seconds compared to kits with less rigorous item separation. It also created more trash. So, we opted to tear open all of them before our first hike to reduce waste in the outdoors.

All the supplies were spread over seven stretchy mesh pockets, providing plenty of opportunity to rearrange items and add more to suit our needs and preferences.

Quantity & Variety

When it comes to the quantity and types of injuries that you can treat with the MyFak Mini supplies, it ranks close to number one. It contains 41 different items, many of which are recommended by NOLS. This kit includes necessities and commonly used items like blister treatment, gauze, and bandages, as well as emergency supplies such as a splint, CPR mask, irrigation solution, and nitrile gloves. 

Additionally, it features cold medication and OTC painkillers, alongside peripheral items like chafe cream, liquid skin, a small sunscreen, and water purification tabs (the only kit with those). It also includes scissors, tweezers, a wound closure kit with super glue, and a space blanket, plus a QR code that directs you to a digital first aid manual.

A Pro version of the kit is available, featuring even more trauma supplies, such as QuickClot and a tourniquet.

Regarding adhesive bandages, even the smallest ones are large. They are the softest and stretchiest, but they also loosen easily after a single hand wash and were the first to fall off.

Quality & Durability

After testing, we’re confident that the My Medic MyFAK Mini will last for years, if not decades. The kit is durable and robust, showing no signs of wear or tear during testing. Although water permeated the canvas sides and zipper during prolonged rain or a sudden downpour, all supplies remain safely stashed in durable zip-top pouches, keeping sensitive contents dry and protected.

With a kit at this price point, we’d expect nothing less than excellence—and we weren’t disappointed.

Should You Buy the My Medic MyFak Mini?

The My Medic MyFak Mini isn’t for everyone. It’s large, heavy, and comes with a hefty price tag. However, for every person who may not find it suitable for their needs, there’s just as many who will. This is especially true for those who prioritize organization above all else and seek the easiest way to keep a kit stocked with the essentials and beyond.

After all, there’s plenty of room inside to add your own supplies, and My Medic makes it easy to order more MODs online, whether you’re replacing ones you’ve used up or looking to enhance your kit with specific items.

It’s an excellent option for group day hikes, especially Scout outings or similar occasions, when you need a wide variety of supplies for a large number of people. Likewise, groups of 4 to 6 will find it a useful kit to share among hikers on longer backcountry excursions. However, duos and small groups will likely find it excessive.

Those seeking a small, lightweight, and streamlined kit, or one that’s easier on the wallet, will want to search elsewhere. You can restock it with cheaper, more readily available supplies from your neighborhood pharmacy if you prefer.
